Innovative OTA evaluation of complex 5G components

Bluetest is happy to announce that the paper "A Dual-Fed PIFA Antenna Element with Non-Symmetric Impedance Matrix for High-Efficiency Doherty Transmitters: Integrated Design and OTA-characterization" was accepted for publication in the prestigious journal IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. The work in the paper was mainly done by the two main authors, Oleg Iupikov and William Hallberg, both with Chalmers University of Technology. Bluetest contributed with OTA characterization of the novel devices in our RTS65 reverberation test systems.

We are happy to participate in these types of innovative research projects which help us to understand where the future of wireless is heading. The highly integrated design presented in the paper is an excellent example of the technology trends in 5G in terms of integration and power efficiency.

This type of integrated devices, where no connector interface between antenna and power amplifier is available, really show the importance of high accuracy OTA measurements. Modern power amplifier architectures such as the Doherty configuration used in this paper, are very efficient and to find the last percents of loss sets very high demands on the measurement uncertainty.

Key technology advancements

  • In February, we launched the RTS85HP 5G Base Station Chamber and have already delivered to a number of customer sites. The new chamber introduces the next generation of OTA testing for high-power 5G base stations & remote radio units.
  • Testing of 5G devices are now up to full speed showing data rates in excess of 1.2Gbps on a single carrier. Our LTE + 5G OTA test solution is the natural choice for the leading suppliers of 5G devices.
  • Bluetest announced a cooperation with Rohde & Schwarz on OTA testing concepts for A-GNSS antenna measurements. The proof of concept solution integrating the R&S LBS Server and Bluetest OTA test solution was demonstrated at Rohde and Schwarz headquarters in Munich.
  • Continuing our close cooperation with Rohde & Schwarz, we introduced signaling OTA measurement support for signaling measurements on Bluetooth Low Energy devices with any of the Bluetest Reverberation chambers.

Bluetest's latest addition to the line-up of reverberation test systems, the RTS85HP was developed to meet new, unique demands for 5G base station testing and a dramatically increased need for OTA solutions. The RTS85HP's technology and specifications target base station manufacturer R&D and production, as well as additional segments such as mobile operators. The new benchmark chamber has already been installed at a base station manufacturer production site, as well as a leading Asia Pacific mobile operator, for testing 5G base station equipment before roll-out in the field.

RTS85HP

The Bluetest RTS 85HP reverberation chamber used by leading base station manufacturer and mobile operator for its 5G base stations.

With a frequency range of 500MHz to 43GHz, the RTS85HP converses all currently discussed 5G bands on sub-6GHz as well as mmWave bands, and a roadmap including a frequency extension to 60GHz - to align with 3GPP spurious emission measurement requirements. The unique chamber is designed to handle RRU output power levels up to 200W, with communication interfaces as well as power supply interfaces in place to meet the requirements of base station testing.

Usability and installation aspects are incorporated by providing customers with a smart, user- friendly GUI including Flow Manager and Flow Analyser. The GUI delivers the possibility to interface with external software, supporting all the testing scenarios quickly, in real-time, and the ability to easily request and add customised features. The Bluetest RTS85HP employs a comparably compact size and a practical chamber height - making it viable in most, normal-sized indoor conditions.

Rohde & Schwarz and Bluetest announce collaboration on test concepts for A-GNSS OTA antenna measurements

Test and measurement specialist Rohde & Schwarz and Swedish over-the-air (OTA) reverberation test system manufacturer Bluetest cooperate on OTA testing concepts for antenna measurements. The proof of concept solution integrating the Rohde & Schwarz LBS Server and Bluetest OTA test solution was demonstrated at Rohde and Schwarz headquarters in Munich.

Testing the antenna performance of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals such as GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo and MBS is key to location accuracy performance of a mobile device.

Rohde & Schwarz and Bluetest partner in creating test concepts for OTA antenna measurements. The two companies integrate the R&S LBS Server, a Software component running on the R&S CMW500 wideband radio communication tester, and the Bluetest OTA test solution for Assisted Global Navigation Satellite System (A-GNSS) based on Bluetest’s RTS65 reverberation chamber and Bluetest’s Flow measurement software.

In this test setup, the R&S LBS Server controls the Rohde & Schwarz base station simulator R&S CMW500 for LTE, WCDMA and GSM and uses R&S SMBV100B vector signal generator for simulation of GNSS and MBS signals. A simple and straightforward upgrade of the setup for 5G will be available soon, making sure that investments are protected and most relevant standards can be tested with the same system.

The R&S LBS Server is an essential part of the R&S TS8991 OTA Performance Test System. This cooperation between Rohde & Schwarz and Bluetest marks the first time that the R&S LBS Server, used here as a software tool on R&S CMW500, is available also for third parties.

EMPLOYING BLUETEST TECHNOLOGY TO ENSURE QUALITY OF IOT APPLICATIONS

IoT is here and providing a new arena for a wide range of opportunities. An interesting array of new applications are introduced to the market daily – all built to improve processes and solve a multitude of challenges across industries, globally. Critical to the success of any new IoT application is test and verification of its key components. Bluetest is providing solutions.

CUSTOMER CASE

One Swedish company well-poised to make a significant contribution within IoT applications is Brinja. Established based on niche expertise within connected devices, Brinja's unique concept and technology is aimed at dramatically increasing safety at construction sites.

The technology provider has created an innovative, new IoT platform that provides an early emergency warning system to enable rapid construction site worker evacuation in case of emergencies, such as a fire.

Brinja's platform's many key components – such as cloud functionality, mechanical and electrical design - were rapidly implemented thanks to technologies such as IoT software platforms and 3D printing. However, one challenge remained; ensuring wireless performance. With Brinja's platform aimed at offering maximal flexibility due to use of cellular technologies, the question remaining was where to place the antenna in the device.

EMPLOYING BLUETEST’S FAST AND EASY-TO-USE REVERBERATION TEST SYSTEM

designed specifically for wireless device testing - a variety of Brinja antenna positions could be easily evaluated, in a matter of minutes. A substantial difference of approximately 10 dB was observed for the different antenna placements when measuring total radiated power (TRP). Results for the various antenna positions are shown in the image, on the right. Total measurement time was less than 1 minute per sample.

Bluetest in cooperation with Rohde & Schwarz introduce signaling OTA measurement support for Bluetooth Low Energy devices

Bluetest, market leader in reverberation test system technology for over-the-air (OTA) tests of wireless equipment and antennas, announces Flow measurement software support for signaling measurements on Bluetooth Low Energy devices using the R&S CMW270 or R&S CMW500 Radio Communication testers from Rohde & Schwarz in combination with any of the Bluetest Reverberation chambers.

The key advantage of using Rohde & Schwarz signaling mode compared with the traditional Direct Test Mode (DTM) is the removal of the HCI control cable typically used for the control of the device as well as providing feedback on received packages during receiver sensitivity measurements. This greatly simplifies Radiated Power (TRP) and Receiver Sensitivity (TIS) measurements on BLE devices as the HCI may not always be easily available on a device in its enclosure, especially for off-the shelf products.

Connecting a cable to very small devices such as in-ear headphones, hearing aids and smart watches may also distort the OTA measurement result as the cable itself affects the performance of the built-in antenna.

Customer Focus


The Flow software enables automated measurements as well as in-depth result analysis and is available with all Bluetest’s OTA chambers, with the Bluetest' RTS25 chamber being particularly well-suited for this category of application. The RTS25 chamber features cost-effective Bluetooth and WLAN measurements, as well as offering our customers a highly compact footprint.

Ultimately, the Bluetest aim is to ensure that wireless testing for device manufacturers is simplified and resulting measurements are more accurate than ever. Further cooperation with Rohde & Schwarz, a long-time partner and market-leading manufacturer of radio communication testers, enable Bluetest to deliver on that challenge.

The R&S CMW test platform delivers the full range of Bluetooth RF tests, including BLE and Classic up to Bluetooth 5.1. Along with signaling tests and tests in Direct Test Mode, the R&S CMW enables audio tests on Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR) links. Additional to the Bluetooth functionality, the R&S CMW offers RF-, protocol and IP throughput tests for all cellular and non-cellular standards. GTT launches new 5G toolkit in first global deployment – incorporating latest market demands for radio base station testing

GTT (Gefle Testteknik), a part of Bluetest and a pioneer in radio base station and wireless test and performance evaluations, today announced the launch of its new 5G NR DL Toolkit with BER/BLER functionality in a global deployment with a leading, undisclosed, telecom manufacturer. The first release of the toolkit has been delivered to the customer’s existing GTT hardware platform with roll-out scheduled for completion by year-end to Europe, the Americas and Asia. The new toolkit complements current test standards at the customer premises and strengthens a long-time cooperation for employing leading technology and services from GTT.

Implementing the toolkit's unique 5G compliant software components at the customer's RBS (radio base station) can be used to transform the previous investment into 5G equipment and supports the new generation of analyzers with wide bandwidth and mmWave functionality.

The 5G NR DL Toolkit includes BER/BLER functionality (Bit Error Rate/Block Error Rate) with support for decoding and BER/BLER measurements, as well as speedy test times and compact footprint – a standard key for most operations. 5G NR Toolkit based on National Instruments PXI platform

The 5G NR Toolkit features include the same core features in all GTT toolkits and is based on National Instruments PXI platform. The toolkit enables a multitude of customer benefits including minimal footprint, reusable hardware to test a variety of unique products, unique flexibility based on open FPGA to enable custom features, and a modular design allowing easy replacement of individual parts and implementation of new software modules. Bluetest and Wind Tre cooperate on device testing with a real mobile network

Bluetest and Wind Tre, a top Italian mobile operator and one of the main operators in the fixed-line market, have together worked on a device test solution where the Wind Tre LTE network is connected directly to a Bluetest reverberation test system. This enables a real life, while still repeatable, test environment in which the function and performance of multi carrier MIMO LTE devices can be accurately evaluated.

The Bluetest reverberation test system is connected through a step attenuator to the RAN. The current configuration use three LTE carriers on different frequency bands with a total of 10 MIMO streams. The step attenuator is used to control the path loss to the device. The Bluetest Flow Server generates IP data traffic that is transported through the mobile network to the device enabling data throughput vs received power measurements.

The test solution can easily be expanded to support even more carriers and MIMO streams as well as the introduction of 5G NR

Anritsu and Bluetest Launch Joint 5G NR OTA Measurement Solution

Following their successful long-term collaboration in LTE OTA measurement solutions, Anritsu and Bluetest are extending their relationship to 5G testing by integrating Anritsu’s Radio Communication Test Station MT8000A and Bluetest’s OTA Reverberation Test System RTS65.

This collaboration will enable existing customers to upgrade their LTE solutions with support for 5G. Upcoming 5G services will use the sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands. 3GPP recommends using over-the-air (OTA) call connections for mmWave band tests, requiring an OTA radio chamber for stable measurements. To support this wide range of frequency bands at reasonable cost and easier setup, Anritsu and Bluetest are collaborating to provide compact integrated solutions with shorter test times.

Anritsu designed its new MT8000A test platform with support for the latest 5G technologies, including wideband signal processing and beam forming required by 5G New Radio (NR) enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB). As well as Protocol tests, the all-in-one platform supports sub-6 GHz and mmWave band signalling RF tests covering the 2.5-, 3.5-, 4.5-, 28-, and 39-GHz NR bands.

Combined Over-the-Air test solutions accelerate development and validation of 5G NR mobile devices.

Keysight Technologies, Inc. Leading mobile operators in China, Japan, Korea and Europe are pursuing ambitious plans to deploy 5G networks in FR1 by the year 2020. Bluetest presents OTA measurements of IoT devices at the IEEE APS/URSI 2017 conference

We are continuing our research work on reverberation chamber for OTA measurements of wireless devices, and we are going deeper into the area of IoT measurements.

The paper we are presenting at the 2017 IEEE AP-S Symposium on Antennas and Propagation includes OTA measurements on Bluetooth, which is commonly used for IoT devices. The paper concludes the flexibility of the reverberation chambers. All Bluetest models were used: RTS95, RTS65, and RTS25, and we can show very good inter- and intra-chamber repeatability. This means that you have the flexibility to choose the chamber size that fits your device form factor, and can be confident that your results are accurate and repeatable, no matter what model you choose.

Bluetest and Aalborg University collaborate on IoT testing

The Internet of Things (IoT) segment brings many new wireless standards to the market. Two of these new standards are Sigfox and LoRa. Both of them are Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) standards operating in the European 868MHz ISM band, but with very different approach to the radio interface implementation.

Dr. Mads Lauridsen and Dr. Ignacio Rodriguez Larrad from the Wireless Communication Networks (WCN) section at the Department of Electronic Systems at Aalborg University in Denmark are therefore studying and comparing the system performance for various IoT standards as a part of the ongoing WCN research project IoT Living Lab. They have already performed real world coverage tests with the two IoT systems and now want to complement these measurements with analysis of the system performance and link budget in a controlled and repeatable test environment provided by Bluetest.

Bluetest’s proposed test setup using the world leading RTS65 OTA (over-the-air) reverberation chamber with the integrated software platform Flow, and the programmable ISS11 Attenuator, a step attenuator to control the path loss between the base station and the device. The measurement solution uses real Sigfox and LoRa base stations connected to their respective back-end servers, providing direct feedback about the number of received messages from the IoT devices and the signal quality of these received messages.

“It is remarkable how well the measurements in Bluetests reverberation chamber work and how much data we are able to collect with only two days of measurements” says Mads Lauridsen.

Product Manager Klas Arvidsson adds: “The testing shows the flexibility of the Bluetest reverberation test system and how easy it adapts to new emerging wireless standards“.

The results from the measurement campaign are expected to be submitted in a conference paper during 2017.

We prepare for 5G - Now offering MIMO OTA solution for initial 5G trials

Gothenburg, Sweden – May 2017 – Bluetest, the world leader in reverberation chamber technology for MIMO OTA (over-the-air) measurements, is introducing a 5G extension package to the worldwide used reverberation chamber RTS65. The new 5G extension package consists of a number of options that enable MIMO OTA measurements for initial trials and deployments of 5G applications.

One of the new features is an extension of the chamber frequency range to 650MHz – 40GHz (standard frequency range is 650MHz – 6GHz). This extension covers the 28GHz band that is being tested as a 5G band in North America and Asia. Another new feature introduced in the 5G extension is a multiple antenna addition that now allows for measurements with up to 16 parallel streams.

“These new features give our customers the opportunity to make their first OTA measurements on initial 5G applications. We believe that OTA measurement functionalities are important at this early stage in 5G development since the market is making trials on “dual connectivity”, high frequencies, and the use of multiple streams simultaneously on different bands. We can cover an early need to test these applications.” says Kjell Olovsson, Bluetest CEO.

Bluetest introduces these new functionalities to enable tests of antenna efficiency and passive MIMO/diversity gain up to 40GHz using a VNA. The measurements are just as fast and easy as the sub 6GHz measurements, without generating excessive chamber loss. Receiver sensitivity, transmitter power, and conformance testing like ACLR and spurious emissions can be supported on both user equipment and base stations using non-signaling signal analyzers and vector signal generators.
