Perceptual audio coding
Perceptual audio coding evolved largely independently of audio modeling in computer music, up until perhaps when HILN (advanced sinusoidal modeling) was introduced into MPEG-4 [217]. Below is a sparse collection of salient milestones in the history of modern perceptual audio coding that came to the author's attention over the years:
- Princen-Bradley filter bank (1986) [214]
- Karlheinz Brandenburg thesis (1989) [24]
- Auditory masking usage [200]
- Dolby AC2 [53]
- Musicam
- ASPEC
- MPEG-I,II,IV (including S+N+T ``parametric sounds'') [16,273]
