I'm looking for an introductory article on the theory of the Hilbert

Its not fancy, but try the below link. This covers the continuous case.
But it is not hard to move over to the discrete domain from this.

For the basics read any signals and sytems or communications book.....
"communication systems" by carlson offers a very good introduction to the
subject of hilbert transform
