Thread reminds me of a news story we had here in the UK recently of a male lawyer who complemented a female lawyer's LinkedIn photo and attracted opprobrium from many (including the female lawyer) and support from others. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/34206080/linkedin-sexism-row-charlotte-proudman-says-lawyer-used-site-like-tinder --------------------------------------- Posted through http://www.DSPRelated.com
Well, if she wants to be treated strictly professionally on LinkedIn or elsewhere then here's what one should do:
Don't include any profile pictures at all and don't list unrelated stuff like your current position/affiliation or being a chair of committee for some useless conference or some bs academia/industry awards etc. etc.
Only provide links to your individual work (articles, books, patents, designs etc.) done without coauthoring/collaboration with some renowned figures in academia or industry.

That will give you "professional" treatment (they'll most likely treat you like shit :-)

On a side note, coming across official website of Frederic J. Harris (http://electrical.sdsu.edu/faculty/frederick_harris.html)
it's hard not to notice that dude got his BSEE in 1961 - before most dudes here were even born, and his PhD in EE in 2008 ???
How come ??? Is this a typo ?

What did he do so wonderful that he was allowed for all the years in between to be a renowned professor and chair and fellow and dsp guru and blah blah blah... without having a measly phd to his name ?

Just a Friday rant, you can disregard :-)

Sure seems overblown to me. Since when is complimenting someone's appearance "misogynistic"? He didn't leer or dwell or ask her out. He just commented on the "stunning" photo. That said, I also think his comments were not professional and should not have been made. I just think the language describing them are a bit extreme. Rather like calling a stink bomb a weapon of mass destruction. -- Rick

Now *that* does come off as misogynistic. It's a bit like suggesting that if women don't want to receive cat calls while walking down the street they shouldn't dress "provocatively". Of course, "provocatively" is in the eye of the cat caller. -- Rick
