21161 ezkit and 96kHz sampling

Started by Johannes Taelman June 26, 2003
Hi!

Did anyone figure out how to operate the AD1836 codec on the 21161ezlite at
96kHz? I'm a little confused.

In Application Note AN-AD1836-21161 "Interfacing the ADSP-21161 SIMD SHARC
DSP to the AD1836 Multichannel codec" is written (on page 10) :

% In this application note, we will only be discussing the simplified TDM
% interface. No discussion covering an I2S interconnections will be
% discussed here. However, in SPORT TDM mode, the AD1836 can only
% generate a 48 kHz sample rate. 96 kHz is only supported in the AD1836's
% I2S modes. Therefore, the sample rate using the AD1836/21161 EZ-KIT
% lite driver is limited to 48 kHz.

I also encountered EE-194: "Connecting the AD1836A Evaluation Board to the
ADSP-21161N SHARC EZ-KIT Lite"

This doc talks about I2S communication, but with an extra evaluation board,
not the onboard AD1836 on the 21161ezkit.

Is there a way to use I2S communication between the DSP and the onboard
AD1836 on the 21161ezlite? Or is it possible to slave the AD1836 to an
external clock source so that it does not have to generate 48kHz? Or should
I just go for the AD1836 eval kit, and leave the onboard codec unused?

thanks for all hints
