Any simple reference designs available to get started with TI DSPs?

Started by jeanpierrepoulin March 23, 2004
Hi, I'm entering the brave new world of TI DSPs from a world of (far
simpler) PICs, and I'm having some difficulty building my first test
circuit...

I'm trying to hook up a C5501 or C6204 (haven't decided yet) with:
- Micron SDRAM
- Intel Flash RAM
- Xilinx CPLD
- Audio A/D & D/A (TLV320AIC23)
- RS232 (Max232)
- (Future revisions will hook up to a CMOS imager, a Compact Flash
card adaptor,

The Spectrum Digital reference designs, while useful, are also very
complex and feature many parts. Just for power regulation, the
C5502 EVM reference design involves two IC (TPS76733QD and TPS62000)
and about two dozens passives. Is all that required just to power
the chip??

I'm looking for the simplest possible circuit that properly powers
the chip, correctly sets up the crystal, has JTAG support and talks
to SDRAM... Have you seen in your travels some reference designs
that are simpler and feature less parts? (In other words, what is
a `basic design' that most beginners can effectively learn from?)

Many thanks for any hints you can offer!!
