C6711 TI DSP Parallel to USB

Started by bleumas March 27, 2009
Hi Folks,

I have the C6711 DSK and would like to hook up with my laptop. The problem is, the DSP board comes only with a parallel port interface (parallel cable provided in DSK) and my laptop only has USB ports.

Has anyone tried using a USB to Parallel Port Cable Converter to hook up with the DSK and a PC?

Thanks,
B Leumas

This question has come up a few times over the last several years.
Someone always says they are going to try it but I do not recall any
feedback indicating success or failure.
From a technical perspective, it *should* work function correctly but
with reduced performance.

We would appreciate hearing from any of you lurkers who may have tried this.

Hello,

I researched on this issue in the discussion archives & Google and have come to the following conclusion:

I did buy a USB to Parallel Cable converter to try interfacing the DSK with the PC. However, Code Composer was unable to do a simple hardware reset to the DSK and gave me a -p378 error. I did set up my BIOS parallel port to hex 378 and PPP.

The mfg. recommends of using the cable converter with printers only (which does work)

The only solution I find is to get a docking station with a parallel port for my laptop and then try again.

More later...

B Leumas and rachana.nagal,

Both of you tried 'a USB to Parallel Cable' with different results.
One thing that would help would be brand and model numbers since all
parallel port converters are not equal.

see comments below.

This should be a red flag. The original PC parallel port only
supported 8 bits data of data out and 4 bits of status in. This is
sufficient to support a parallel port printer. A decent parallel port
converter should indicate that it supports parallel port scanners or
specifically indicate that it is a bi-directional parallel port [or
EPP mode].
A bi-directional port is required to support the 6211/6711DSK.

Michael, In response to your request:

I purchased the "Cables Unlimited USB to DB9 Serial & DB25 Parallel Cable". This is a 2-in-1 cable consisting of a serial and parallel connector.

The connector mentions on the package that the Parallel Port supports ECP/EPP/SPP mode.
