help chose dsp

hello everybody,

I m working on image compression with Matlab (wavelets, color
transformation, RLE and Huffman codage..) . I will finish my programs
soon, and will have to chose a DSP on which I can put my code. Even if
I never did it, I ve heard it' s possible to use CCS and Matlab
directly to put code on dsp. But that's not my problem just now.

I begin to look at different Texas DSP, and i ve got some problems to
really understand what I need.

I think that I ll probably chose a C6x and I know I ve to look at
frequency, MIPS, RAM...

But I can't see the way to determine which frequency, how much
MIPS ....?? It's the first time I ve to chose a DSP.

Is there a way to determine exactly what DSP will be better than
another for my application ?

Or should I take the best to be sure it ll be ok ?

Then, should I take a starter kit for my development ?

I m sorry for all these questions, I m really a newbie. And even if I
try to search on texas web site, it's not clear at all for me !

It is very hard to answer your question with so many
unknowns, but I can provide my opinion.
1. Do you have any I/O requirements?? Video, audio,
etc. You need to make sure that whatever board that
you choose can handle the I/O.
2. Since you appear to be heavily involved with
mathematics, will you require high performance
floating point capability?? i.e., will you be doing
realtime FP computations??
3. Since you do not appear to be experienced, I would
suggest that 'popularity' or 'large number of users'
for the product that you select would be an advantage.
i.e., if you find 'the perfect board for your use'
and no one has ever heard of it, it will be difficult
to find reference information or assistance from
others.
4. Depending on your requirements, I would think that
one of the following might meet your needs-
DM642 EVM
6416 DSK
6713 DSK
