Is this obvious - not sure. Of course I can pass white noise through the impulse response then calculate periodogram in the usual way from the time series. But is there a simpler way?

But is there a simpler way?Sounds like you're interested in the filter's amplitude response. You can get that by simply "FFTing" the impulse response. If you have Gnu Octave or MATLAB at your disposal, enter "help freqz".
