Oops! That was supposed to be a reply to the "Sorry about the many posts" thread. I screwed it up, but not sure whether I should apologize. Gene

Yeah, they should get a room! Instead of hijacking my thread maybe they could use some of their energy helping with the question i posed yesterday. Michael

So sorry, you can have your thread back. Ced --------------------------------------- Posted through http://www.DSPRelated.com

Michael Your original post in that thread did not contain a question. Long-time participants in comp.dsp did ask questions that led to exchanges of information until the fire fights started. In open newgroups people often fight fires where they find them. Some people think that casual use of technical language is a fire, some people think that trolling sock-puppets are fires. A moderator could have removed an offending reference to a 7 year old conference presentation that contained casual use of technical language. A moderator could have removed off topic posts from a trolling sock-puppet, but comp.dsp has no moderator. If you really care about a question you can always start a new thread with the question indicated in the title. And you can always make snide remarks in side threads, that's another advantage of unmoderated newsgroups. Have Fun! Dale B. Dalrymple

I am not saying that the topic being debated is off topic. I just can't see the discussion leading anywhere. Engineers have one way of looking at things, matematicians have another. I think it has been established that the continuos case is a Sinc, the discrete case is a Digital Sinc. The DFT of a real signal is yet another thing. To some people the difference is significant, to others it's insignificant. Michael

I have been following this newsgroup since around 1992 I think it was and I don't remember seeing ANY fights or fires here ! Did I miss something ? Now, sci.electronics.design is a whole 'nother game. WW3 might just start from there ! boB K7IQ

There have been, however, more than a few energetic discussions. ;) --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

you must have. i've been in a periodic fight regarding the inherent periodicity of the Discrete Fourier Transform. (and i have been sorta accurately labeled a Nazi regarding it. i'm more of a fundamentalist zealot; those who deny the inherent periodicity of the DFT should be burned to the stake as heretics. there can be only one true gospel of the FFT here.) there was a guy named zxform, there was E. Robert Tisdale, there was our late friend Vlad, who hosted the 2nd comp.dsp conference. and there have been a few trolls. and i s'pose i am not the most pacifist on USENET, despite my religious tradition. r b-j

I'd really think a more ... Hindu metaphor to be more appropriate. :)
