Fingerprint image enhancement

Hi,
As part of my term project i am trying to replicate the results of the
paper "Fingerprint Image Enhancement:Algorithm and Performance
Evaluation -Lin Hong, Student Member, IEEE, Yifei Wan, and Anil Jain,
Fellow, IEEE"

The paper is about enhancing and removing any spurious ridges in
fingerprint images using frequency and orientation estimation and then
applying gabor filters.We have implemented all the algorithms as
suggested in the paper.But the final image seems only to have removed
the background noise,it doesnt succesfully interpolate at the ridges
where there is a minor fuzziness.My guess is that my estimated
frequency values are too low,hence the problem
I know this is too generic a question,but if anyone has worked on
anything even remotely like this,could you help provide some hints..It
will be swell helpful
