audio signal processing for music transcription

Hello all, I am interested in the above subject and wondered if anyone
was familiar with it in terms of:
- are there any good books on the topic?
- is software available for this?

I am considering attempting to make my own software on a modest scale
but I don't want to start from zero if it's all been done.

No. This is a very difficult topic.

The only book (on this topic) I know of is

}

As for software, you may want to have a look at the many wave to midi 
converters.

I don't know about books, but I know there have been a number of, if not 
many, research papers of the topic.
