image enhancement through dynamic range compression and contrast enhancement

Hi,

I've read in my old textbook that using omomorphic filtering + a slightly 
modified gaussian highpass filter I can enhance the visibility of images, 
but when I tryed I simply obtained a darker image, which makes sense since 
the dc is the value reduced the most.
Does someone know how this filter works?
