Sawtooth FM generation

Started by Unknown April 9, 2008
With the wealth of knowledge sloshing around here, can someone point
me to a reference/reading for generation of FM using sawtooth pulses?
That's all i have to go on, well, that, and the fact that there was a
bandlimiting filter prior to the FM modulation and then translation to
IF. Any suggestions? This is probably a common technique with a
funny name.

Best way is to have a VCO set to the IF frequency which you then modulate with the baseband signal. Then up-convert with a multiplier.

You might Google on "FM modulation sawtooth", without the quotes. There is a lot to read there. Dale B. Dalrymple http://dbdimages.com

Wow, that was fast. Serrasoid is the winner it seems. I knew there would be a name for it. Thanks. col

Of course, 'serrasoidal modulator' appears twice in the first eight Google citations without even needing to click through. That would have been even quicker. Dale B. Dalrymple

Easy there chief. The first hit did indeed include serrasoid modulator but was from freepatentsonline which is terrible to read. The second is a pdf that doesn't really explain the operation and thus didn't confirm that that was what it was called. Make sure you take your calming pills next time before you post. cheers, col

You didn't ask for an explanation, you asked for the name. The Google on "FM modulation sawtooth" got that. If you want to check an explanation then you should Google on "serrasoidal modulator". If you take any term you get from comp.dsp without checking it on Google or elsewhere (better yet, Google and elsewhere) you run the risk of finding that you got what you paid for. Why do you think someone would have to be agitated to explain a helpful comment to you? Dale B. Dalrymple
