Host Interface

Hi,
I am using the DSP56858. I am having some problems understanding how
the HI8 works. Is there a way that I can send a block of data to the
output of the DSP without having the host processor connected? Is the
host processory required to be connected and produce signals to
trigger the DSP to send? Is there a way I can produce these signals
without involving the host processor for now?
I don't understand how the DSP and host processor will be interacting
together. What sort of signals and commands does the host processor
have to send so that the DSP can transfer? What exactly does the host
processor have to set up in the host side registers before anything
can be transfered/received?
I think I'm confused about the basic workings of the HI8. Can someone
please help me with maybe a brief description or a good link that
provides me with the basics of HI8?
