Using Dual-Port RAM

Started by rashmi ranjana June 11, 2001
hi,

I was planning to use IDMA method in order to
establish communication between ADSP-2188 and a host
processor. At the same time my friend suggested that,
using Dual-port RAM could be an alternative for
communication
between Host and ADSP.
I would like to know what are the advantages and
disadvantages
of using the Dual-Port RAM method in my system Design.

Looking forward to your replies.........

bye

IDMA *is* dual-port ram. Note that when the host accesses
the IDMA, the dsp will skip a few cycles, possibly affecting
any time-critical things.

The other way is to use a hardware fifo between the
dsp and host.

If you use dual port ram you still have the cost of adding external boot memory.

Using IDMA allows one to boot from host, in that the host loads the PM & DM in
the dsp eliminating the need for an external flash or eprom to boot the dsp.
Using this method, a part of the dsp's memory space can be set aside and used as
a sort of shared memory.

The down side to using the IDMA is that it limits your external memory space to
just eight locations (two addresses per chip select) rashmi ranjana <> on 06/10/2001 21:50:06
