TMS320C6416 DSP Starter Kit (DSK)

Started by non_existence_entity May 7, 2004
Hi DSPians,

I am a newbie with DSP , but will be taking DSP specialization as my
major this coming semester.

I wish to get myself a Starter kit so that I can mess with it during
the late nights. My focus is in image/video processing .

After reading a few datasheet TMS320C6416 DSP Starter Kit (DSK) seems
to be my choice right now , as it has support for video input, or is
it not ?. Do I need to get anything else besides this starter kit to
get me up and running? The starter kit comes with the "expressDSP for
Dummies" title, which I guess could be helpful to a dummy right me..:-
D

Any suggestions or recommendations is appreciated.

Thnks

I guess you have got the wrong impression. The DSK
doesn't have video input/output ports etc. Use the
DM642 EVM for that purpose. But that would be many
times costlier.

Hi Piyush,

Thank you for pointing that up. I was confused indeed.

DM642 EVM  is to expensive for me to purchase.  How can I get live video input  for the TMS320C6416  kit at minimum cost for a student ? Need not have to be via a Video decoder but maybe USB or Firewire cameras ? Any low cost Third party board or  daughter Board ? I am still surfing the net for options, not much low cost stuff out there.

If it is still too expensive, I guess I will have to work with still images from bitmap files as a start. Can I do that easily?

Bythe way, is it better for me to get the fixed point or floating point DSP?  in image processing contex that is.

Thank you
NEE

Suggest to use DSK C6711 and IDK daughtercard, which has both video in and
out. Cost is much lower. Since you are a poor student, there should be
no problem to use C6711 (or C6211) for your image processing project
instead of C6416.

Hi "Non Exiting Entity",

I have seen a couple of other boards too, for video
development, like one of Ateme, but none of them would
be much cheaper than the EVM. I don't know any Video
specific daughter cards for dsk, but better ask TI
about that.
As for development using bitmaps. You should be able
to do that easily. Even for video there is not much of
a problem with dsk till you don't want live capture
of video. For a start you can feed prerecorded yuv/rgb
files (using file i/o or rtdx) to your algo instead.
That should be easy. Display of picture in Code
Composer itself also is pretty good. See Graph menu.
As for fixed vs floating, it depends on the algorithms
and development time you have, but for most
applications/algorithms fixed-point should be good
enough.

Hello Jeff,

I am also working on DSK6711 to develop MPEG 4 Simple Profile Video
Encoder/Decoder (concurrent) on TMS320C67x. May I know which IDK you are
referring to you in your e-mail below and where can we get it from ?

I would be deeply obliged.

Suggest to use DSK C6711 and IDK daughtercard, which has both video in and

no problem to use C6711 (or C6211) for your image processing project
