project ideas for DM642 in video processing

Started by saur...@hotmail.com December 5, 2005
Hello Everyone!

I am relatively new to the field of embedded system design and am interested in doing a demo project that involves the DM642 board. My team and I are particularly interested in the development of a system that can process video in real-time for automotive, aerospace, defense, or semiconductor, and electronics type applications. We would like this project to be representative of the kind of work that is being done in the industry with this board. To this end, I am posting on here to request your advice and recommendations. So if someone could please provide some ideas for project we would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know if I should provide more information.

Thank you for your time and help.

The simplest would be writing a streaming video
decoder/player.

Hi Piyush,

Thank you for your message. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

Perhaps, I wasn't very clear in explaining what we are interested in. We'd like the project to solve a problem in the areas I listed earlier (automotive, aerospace, defense, or semiconductor, and electronics applications). For example, in the automotive area -- many new luxury cars makers are coming up with concept cars that are mounted with cameras to help the driver change lanes or back the car without hitting anything behind the car. This would entail development of video processing algorithm, then converting to fixed point, and finally porting the code to the dsp. In both cases, I believe a DM642 could be used. We are looking for something along these lines that is being done in the industry in the above listed areas. If you or anyone else could please advice on some typical applications in these fields I would be very grateful. Thank you in advance for your help.

"Luxury car makers" --> millions of dollars, team of 10+ professional engineers with
years of experience, several years of work.

"Academic project" --> low budget, 2-4 students with no experience, need to get done
in 6 months or less.

I would advise you to follow Piyush' advice and choose something simple. If you want
to go down the pattern recognition / automotive path, then maybe try mounting the
camera at the back of the car, pointing down, to detect motion in this area when the
transmission is in neutral or reverse. I understand the "rear blind spot" for SUVs
and other big cars is very dangerous and in some cases drivers cannot see a
child-size object in the blind spot until they pull forward up to 10m or more.

This would be quite a tough project for academic purposes. I almost feel bad for
recommending :-)
