Thanks everybody for some interesting info on the subject. Clearly all
is not as it appears. There should be more historians (Scientific)
writing books about such stuff.
There are some excellent books 'A history of communications at Bell
labs' or some such which I read a long time back. They are excellent
though hardly impartial!!
