Opinions on "Multirate Signal Processing..." by F.J.Harris?

Started by Oli Charlesworth March 16, 2008
Dear all,

I was thinking of purchasing "Multirate Signal Processing for
Communication Systems" by F.J.Harris. Has anyone here used this book,
and if so, what are your opinions?

Thanks in advance,

I've got a copy. It's got some good stuff on Transmultiplexers in it which was helpful on some recent development I did. Recommended. Eric

Oli, I've scanned it and paid rather careful attention to some bits of it. I'd say it's very well done and treats some interesting ideas that you may not find elsewhere. Fred

"scanned it" - do you mean you scanned the whole book with a scanner? All n pages of it?

I think he used the term in another sense. Consider a sailor scanning the horizon from the crows nest. Really now. Want a .pdf? =:-o I ran into a group that would scan-read (eyeball) books in no time flat - maybe 2-3 seconds per page. It actually worked rather well with the notion that one might stop now and then to focus on a particular paragraph. Harder to do with books like this one tho... When I was in college I used to skip all the equations when reading engineering books. Then, in the second read or for reference that's the focus. I gotta have context. Fred

Hello Oli, I definitely recommend harris' book. Here are a few words excerpted from a "Book Review" I wrote for harris' book: "When it comes to designing computationally-efficient multirate systems, this book is a treasure chest of multirate filter gems. For that reason I'll make the bold statement that no designer of multirate systems, for example designers involved with software defined radios (SDRs), should be without this book. Stated in different words; if you want to study the detailed mathematical derivations of multirate systems, several textbooks are available to you. If you want to actually build a multirate system, you need this book." (As for me, a few weeks ago I sent fred harris an E-mail to see if he has compiled an errata for his book. I haven't heard back from fred, so I'll have to "bug" him again.) Good Luck, [-Rick-]

Like Rick, I am a big Fred Harris fan. You can always learn something new from Fred. I have this book. I also have the other popular multirate books (Vaidyanathan, Crochiere & Rabiner, Fliege). I like Harris the best. Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc.

Hi Al, Whew. That's a very "tough" reading list! :-) By the way, I forgot to mention to Oli (and you) that harris' MATLAB code (for his book) is available. All you have to do is click the "Downloads" button at: http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0131465112 Also, yesterday I sent another E-mail to fred harris to see if he's compiled an errata for his book. We'll wait to see what fred says. Regards, [-Rick-]

You can't have too many books. I live a long way from technical libraries and just plain peer-to-peer networks. This group and the internet in general has been of tremendous benefit to my understanding of DSP. Perhaps, its time for a second comp.dsp conference. I would be glad to be part of a new politburo for another event. For those we don't remember, I hosted the first comp.dsp conference in 2004. I think we all had a great time. The papers are posted here: http://www.danvillesignal.com/comp.dsp-conference/comp.dsp-conference- presentations.html This was the agenda: http://www.danvillesignal.com/comp.dsp-conference/comp.dsp-conference- information.html Here are a few pictures: http://www.danvillesignal.com/comp.dsp-conference/photos-of-the-2004- comp.dsp-conference.html

Thank you, I will grab the downloads.

What? Authors of DSP books make mistakes?
