ADSP21161N datasheet question

Started by Karsten Backhaus July 31, 2001
Hi,

studiing the ADSP-21161N Preliminary Data Sheet (from July 2000, there
is no newer version, is'nt it?) I found the following:

Table 37 at page 73/74 shows for PBGA Pin# P14 a pin named "AVSS". Well,
that pin is'nt shown at table 13-1, pages 543-561 of the "ADSP-21161N
SHARC DSP Hardware Reference" sheet. Instead there a pin named "AGND"
can be found, but that pin is not shown in Table 37 of the "ADSP-21161N
Preliminary Data Sheet"

Well, I want to build a library file for our pcb layout program, and now
my question is:
are "AVSS" and "AGND" the same pins/signals?

Thanks,

Karsten

Hallo Karsten

Yes, I think it is pretty safe to assume that this is the same pin. VSS is often
used to refer to the source voltage as opposed to the drain voltage (usually
VDD). The pins on the FPGA package and the pin table
seem consistent too. The AGND pin can be tied to the digital ground plane (it is
the return for the current used in the analog PLL circuitry). The analog VCC
should be filtered according to the data sheet.

Cheers,
Clifford

Sounds like someone changed the name along the way. VCC (collector
voltage) and GND are commonly used in TTL chips with bipolar
transistors, while VDD and VSS (drain and source voltage) are used in
MOS chips with FET's. The purpose is the same; the names change to
reflect the kind of transistor in use.
